Pittsburgh traveled to Jamestown, NY on Friday to take on the always tough Southern Tier Xpress. The game started out with a scoreless first period before Southern Tier capitalized on a Vengeance breakdown to take a 1-0 lead midway through the second period of play. Austin Martz drew the Vengeance even at 1-1 with a powerplay goal assisted by Brian Dee and James Unger to set the stage for a winner take all third period. Unfortunately, neither team would respond in the third and the score would remain tied at 1--1 after regulation. The Vengeance began overtime with a 4-on-3 man advantage and Cam Williams banged home the game winner from Martz and Unger to give the Vengeance a 2-1 victory. Joel De Simone stopped 26 of 27 Xpress shots for Pittsburgh in the victory.
Pittsburgh hosted the rematch against Southern Tier on Sunday looking for a weekend sweep. The Vengeance jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead on two goals by Williams. Dom Glavach and Gavin Cummings each notched a goal for Pittsburgh in the second, while Southern Tier managed to score one for a score of 4-1 heading into the third frame. The final period of regulation was all Xpress, as they scored three straight goals to send the game to overtime. Southern Tier took advantage of a sloppy change by the Vengeance and scored a breakaway winner to cap an astounding comeback and head home with a 5-4 win. Nick Manousos stopped 27 of 32 in the net for Pittsburgh to take the loss.
"That's the most embarrassing period of hockey I've seen in quite a while and truthfully we had some players that put themselves above the team ," said Coach Dorsey.
Pittsburgh will travel to Wooster on Friday night and then host the Oilers on Saturday night at the Alpha Ice Complex in Harmar, PA at 6:30pm.
