Playoff Run Ends Abruptly for Vengeance

Team Captain Michael Straub (pictured) looks ahead as Vengeance face off against the Metro Jets in final of Best of Three 2nd Round…

3HL Playoff 2nd Round, Final Game in of best of 3 – While Pittsburgh battled to the end, the Jets proved to be too much for them to overcome.  Vengeance net minder, Brian Baker stopped 45 of 47 shots, but the Metro Jets shut down the Vengeance in the attack zone allowing only 18 shots.  Game over for the Vengeance at 2-1 favor, Metro Jets.

The Jets took a first period lead on a goal by Ryan Bloom (Asst: Tyler Layle, Matt Dempsey) with 5:55 remaining in the period.  In that period, Metro outshot the Vengeance 13 to 6.  In the second period, both teams traded shots throughout.  Pittsburgh scored about eight minutes in when Nils Markgren slipped one past Jets net minder Jake Stephan.  Cody Black who was out with an injury was seeing his first playoff action assisted on the Markgren goal.

With just 27 seconds remaining in the second frame, Cody Jones (Asst: David Chavis) scores what would prove to be the Game Winner.  In the third, Metro dominated and kept the puck on the Vengeance side of the blue line most of the period while hurling 22 shots at Baker.  Twenty minutes later, no one scored and the final was in the books; Metro 2, Pittsburgh 1.

With the win, Pittsburgh is eliminated and the Metro advance to the Silver Cup Championships next weekend in Chicago where the winners of each Division’s best of three 2nd Playoff Round winners plus one Wildcard team will face off to determine the Leagues Champion for 2014-15.

Congratulations to the Metro Jets.  We know they will represent the Division well in the Playoff Finals.

For the Vengeance, it’s been a great season.  They finished the season 7th overall with a .703 winning percentage tying the Metro Jets in total points at 66, but losing 1st place in the Easter Division to them by the tie breaker.  Pittsburgh also had the least number of penalty minutes (505) among the field of 31 teams.  Their Special Teams were 4th (24.48%) in Power Play scoring and 8th (85.53%) in Penalty Killing.

Two players finished in the top 15 in scoring (Markgren 58 pts in 40 games and Cody Black 55 pts in 45 games) and Goalies Brian Baker (2.19) and Jake Stack (2.53) finished the season in the top 15 league leaders in Goals Against Average.  And, along the way, the team managed to advance one of their players (Gavin Cummings) in-season to the NAHL level with the Rio Grande Killer Bees.
