Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Metro Jets defeated the xPittsburgh Vengeance in a shootout 2-1 (2-0 SO).
The two teams needed eight turns to complete the shootout. In addition to the clincher, Metro got a shootout goal from Josh Hosking.
The Jets overcame a one-goal deficit to capture the victory. Metro trailed 1-0 after a goal by xPittsburgh\’s Cody Black at 32 seconds in the second period. The Jets tied things up at 1-1 on a goal by Cooper McLean at 2:02 in the third period.
Metro was led by goalie Kameron Limburg, who finished with 27 saves while allowing one goal. Limburg managed to improve on his goals against average, which stood at 3.26 prior to the game.
The Jets put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Vengeance to score on any of their three power plays. Metro forced xPittsburgh goalie Jason Kumpfmiller to work between the pipes, taking 36 shots.
In addition, Metro received assists from Matt Dempsey, who had one.
The Vengeance excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in five chances. xPittsburgh was held below its usual level of production. The Vengeance average 3.2 goals per game.
Other players who recorded assists for xPittsburgh were Tom Diffendal, who had one.
The Jets incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors. Jason Kumpfmiller made 34 saves for xPittsburgh on 35 shots. The Vengeance incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
