La Crosse holds on for 4-3 win against Wisconsin

The Wisconsin Whalers tried their best to erase a two-goal deficit, but the La Crosse Freeze would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 4-3.

La Crosse made the score 4-2 on a goal by Augusts Veidenbaums at 17:30 in the second period, and Wisconsin got as close as 4-3 when Nathan Viberg scored 11:07 into the third period.

Taylor Trapp and Veidenbaums provided the spark for the Freeze, combining for three goals and one assist. Trapp registered two goals and one assist and Veidenbaums also added one goal.

La Crosse forced the Whalers\’ goalies to work between the pipes, totaling 41 shots and forcing 37 saves. Evan Moyse made 31 stops and David Volkmann made six.

Jared Bromberg also scored for La Crosse. More assists for La Crosse came via Zach Lawson, who had two and Hunter Dragosh, Daniel Toycen, and Ethan Stafford, who each chipped in one.

Wisconsin\’s offense rang up 51 shots on the Freeze\’s net.

The Whalers were helped by Connor Morgan, who finished with two goals. Morgan scored the first of his two goals at 10:00 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Adam Alcott assisted on the tally. Morgan\’s next tally made the score 3-2 La Crosse with 5:40 left in the second period. Wisconsin had gotten the advantage when La Crosse\’s Brady Thiering was sent off for slashing. Viberg picked up the assist. Wisconsin also got points from Viberg, who also grabbed one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Other players who recorded assists for Wisconsin were Peter Henderson, Adam Schoenfeld, Kaleb Morley, and Nolan Kepler, who contributed one each.

Cameron Scheuren rejected 48 shots on goal for the Freeze. La Crosse incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. The Whalers incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with three minors.
