This past weekend, 6 members of the Pittsburgh Junior Penguins were honored with being selected to participate in the North American 3 Hockey League (3HL) Top Prospects Tournament, presented by Combat Hockey. The Top Prospects Tournament started on Friday, May 4th and ran through Sunday, May 6th at the Dr Pepper Star Center in Frisco, Texas and is one of the most scouted events during the Junior Hockey season.
The event features four teams, one from each of the four 3HL Divisions, competing against one another in the three-day event that showcases some of the 3HL's top players and prospects. The event is run in conjuncture with the NAHL’s Robertson’s Cup, which is the Tier II Junior Championship series.
The 6 members of the Junior Penguins represented the Top Prospects Tournament Champion Team East. Team East compiled a record of 3-1, winning the Championship game 2-1. Bryan Hovanec scored the game winning goal in the Championship game, assisted by Nick Randazzo.
Goalie Tyler Stepke made 25 saves for the Tournament victory and led all goalies with a 2-0 record, a shutout. 0.50 goals against average and a 97.7% save percentage in the Tournament.
Randazzo also had a game winning goal in the first victory for Team East. Alex Berardinelli had a strong Tournament with solid two way play while on a line with Randazzo and Hovanec.
Defenseman Michael Straub (pictured above) led all defenseman in the Tournament in scoring with 3 points in 4 games and was a force in all 3 zones. David Mnatsyan, although held off the scoreboard, was the most consistent player who did all the little things right to make his teammates better.
