The Junior A Penguins came up with two of their best efforts of the year versus a determined Toledo team in the CSHL opening playoff round. The Penguins opened up Friday night and pulled out a 3-0 victory behind the goaltending of Colin Lemay. \” The first game in any series is always the toughest and we knew it was going to be a battle. Toledo is a hard working hockey team that was one of the best teams in the CSHL during the final stretch. We scored a big goal late in the period on the power play and that gave us an emotional lift, \” said Coach Dorsey.
Drew Martz added a goal in the second on a beautiful pass from Nick Persichetti and Ryan Kumpfmiller made a great lead pass to Mikael Lemieux behind the defense to give the Pens a 3-0 victory. \” I was very proud of the way everybody played and I thought it was a great team victory, \” added Coach Dorsey.
The Junior A Pens came out on Saturday night trying to wrap up the series in two, but Toledo had different plans. Toledo killed off a 5 on 3 early and had the momentum until Vinny Somma blocked a shot and scored on a breakaway to put the Pens up 1-0. \” The Somma goal was huge because they were controlling play and that seemed to settle us down, \” said Coach Dorsey.
Somma and Lemieux would each score goals to put the Pens up 3-0 after one. Toledo dominated the second, but Colin LeMay would rise to the occasion again and Mikael Lemieux would add a pretty goal and put the Pens up 4-0 after two. Todd Thomas, Shamus Finnerty and Mikael Lemieux would score in the third to give the Penguins a 7-0 victory. \” Both of these games were a lot closer than the scores indicate and Toledo battled us to the very end.
Lemieux had a special game tonight and LeMay was huge for us in the nets. The most important thing about both of these games is the entire team played well and during this time of the year you need everybody, \” added Coach Dorsey. The Junior A Penguins will head to St. Louis next week to compete in the Hurster Cup. The Hurster Cup is for the CSHL league playoff champion and will involve the final four remaining teams. \” We are a the underdog, but we will go there and give it our all, \” said Coach Dorsey.
