Junior A Pens defeat Cleveland 8-3 in exhibition game.
Pens get ready for regular season with a tune-up game versus Jr Lumberjacks.
The Junior A Pens did not get the season started out on the right foot as the Cleveland Lumberjacks scored at 1:30 into the game. The young Pens responded though with three unanswered goals to take a 3-1 lead after one period. Sean McCue banged home a rebound off a great individual effort from Austin Shipaila. Then, Nolan Trombetta put the Pens ahead for good when he put home a rebound two minutes later and D.J. Dinnison scored to cap the first period.
The Pens then outscored Cleveland 5-2 over the next two periods. Veteran defensemen Mike Kretz (pictured) scored a hat trick and Ben Hanus added a tally early in the third period. Justin Selep put the finishing touches on the game with a goal late in the third period.
Hanus picked up a couple of nice assists for a three point night and the Jr Penguins got solid goaltending from both Colin LeMay and Mike Hynes. “ We did not play that bad for the first game, but we made a lot of mental mistakes that we have to eliminate if we want to be a playoff team, “ said Coach Paul Taibi. “ This was an nothing more than an exhibition game and starting next Saturday everything counts, “ added Taibi.
The Junior A Pens open the season at Harmarville Bladerunners versus the Peoria Mustangs. They will battle the Mustangs on Saturday night at 7:20 and again on Sunday afternoon at Noon. These games will both be broadcast on FASTHockey if you are not able to make it out to the rink.
