Jr B Pens Sweep Patriots

Pittsburgh Junior B Penguins 7 – Potomac Patriots 2

After a brutal weekend against the Moose a week ago, the Jr B Penguins were hoping to change the pattern they set on Conay Island.  However, they again struggled to score in the first.  Although they dominated play in the Patriots end, they managed only one tally from Straub at the 15:18 mark.

However, things were aboiut to change, and for the better.  In the second period, they scored early at the 2:40 mark, when Berardinelli slid a shot past Potomac’s net minder Rose.  Then, just three minutes later, Pawlowski (pictured) put a blistering backhand over the stick shoulder of a stunned Rose.

The Patriots stuck to their game plan and Gregory was finally able to put Potomac on the board at the 7:57 mark of the period with an unassisted goal while Brett for the Jr B Penguins finished out the scoring in the second by adding 2 more goals and it appeared that the drought was over.

Hunter Brett completed the hat trick in the third when he took a pass from Hovanec and rifled it past the Patriots net minder just 25 seconds in.  The Patriots got their final goal of the night 4:10 in as Cianciolo took a pass from Gregory and put it past Pens goalie Mortland.

The Pens finished their scoring as Brett notched his fourth goal of the night from a pass by Berardinelli who finished the game with four helpers.

Game two of the weekend series proved to more of the same from the Pens as team Captain Toby Nehnevajsa took a pass from Todd and buried it past Patriot goalie Moyer just 2 minutes into the game.  Hovanec added a second goal at the 12:18 mark from Berardinelli and Chiala.

Although the Patriots pushed hard, the Jr Pens Defense was smothering as they held the Patriots to only 2 shots on their net minder Allen for the first period!

The second period was once again dominated by the Pens Defense as they held Potomac to minimal shots on net.  The Pens continued their scoring while Chiala and Myers netted a goal each to close out the second at 4-0.

Both teams exchanged goals early in the third with the Patriots mark coming on a PENALTY SHOT by Anthony Cianciolo who beat Allen to get his team on the board.  Although the Patriots seemed to be more on track in the third, the Pens still managed to out score them closing out the game at 10-3 when the final horn sounded.

The Pens are not in action this weekend as they prepare for two road games with the 3-3 Buffalo Junior Stars 10/16 & 17.  All game results and team and player stats are posted on Point Streak.  Their Game Day Broadcasts are also available and archived on Fast Hockey.
