The Junior A Pens were looking to ride the momentum of an undefeated CSHL Showcase against the Cleveland Lumberjacks. Although the Pens came up out flying in the first period, they were only able to open up a 1-0 lead. The Lumberjacks struck for three quick goals in the second and added a shorthanded goal late in the period to take a 4-1 lead after two. The teams traded third period goals for a 5-2 final in favor of Cleveland.
The deciding game of the series on Sunday would be a pivotal game for the Junior A Pens. The Pens desperate for a split dressed only (18) guys for the game on Sunday due to three players violating team rules. The Pens came out strong and held a 1-0 lead after one period of play. However, like Saturday, the Lumberjacks would strike early in the second on a defensive breakdown to tie it up at one. The start of the third period saw the score tied at one with twenty minutes of hockey to go.
The Pens would go up 2-1 on a power play goal, but Cleveland would strike for two power play goals of their own to take a 3-2 lead. The Pens would commit another defensive miscue that would lead to a breakaway goal and 4-2 victory for the Cleveland Lumberjacks.
“ We are not very good defensively right now and they are, “ said Coach Taibi. “ We wanted to score 10 goals and they played to win, “ Taibi added.
The Pens announced after the game the signing of veteran forward Fredrik Eriksson (pictured). “Eriksson is a winning hockey player and you can never have to many of them, “ said G.M. David Dorsey. “ Quite frankly we are hoping to add more players like this in the future, “ Dorsey added. The Junior A Pens will take on the improving Flint Junior Generals this weekend at Blade Runners Ice Complex in Harmar, Pa.
