The Pittsburgh Jr Penguins, proud members of the NA3HL, opened the 2011-2012 campaign at home with a pair of victories against inter-conference rival, the Battle Creek Revolution.
On Saturday Sept 10, the Jr Penguins opened the scoring gate often in the first period and continued to roll throughout the game. Defenseman David Mnatsyan (pictured right), a member of the Jr B Penguins last season and a draft pick, led the way with 4 goals. Nico Vecchio, a veteran of the Jr Penguin family and returning Jr A player, had 5 assists. “ We actually distributed the puck very well and spread out the scoring, even though Nico and David had a big game”, said Jr Penguins Head Coach Brian Cersosimo. “ I think we did a good job in moving the puck and executing our special teams.” Cersosimo added. Pittsburgh went 3 for 6 on the PP and added a short handed goal as well.
On Sunday Sept 11, the Jr Penguins started off strong again and got contributions from everyone. “ It was just a continuation off the momentum built the night before” said Cersosimo. “It’s just the opening weekend of the season. There are so many evenly matched teams in the 3HL and the competition is so tough that this was just an anomaly, rather than a norm.”
When the dust settled, 12 different Jr Penguins scored, 18 different Jr Penguins recorded a point and the goaltenders made saves on all of the shots they faced.
Up next for the Jr Penguins is a tough road trip to battle Division rival Flint. Flint is coming off a good weekend where they picked up 3 of 4 points against Cleveland and Metro.
