On Thursday June 02, 2011, the Pittsburgh Jr A Penguins, proud members of the NA3HL, participated in the Leagues 2011 player Entry Draft. On the heels of their recent success moving 5 of their Jr A Penguins from last season to the NAHL with four of those drafted in the first seven selections, the Club looked to capitalize on more program grown talent in their own 3HL Draft. Their overall goal is to develop a solid player base for entry to the NAHL, USHL or Collegiate hockey especially for the players competing on one of their Jr Penguin Program teams.
With the Jr B Penguins coming of an extremely successful campaign last season in the CHA, they drafted seven of their own. Additionally, three other players with a prior Jr Penguin connection at Tier I Midget were also drafted. “The purpose of our program is to develop student-athletes through the Jr Penguins program teams in order to prepare them to make the next step in their hockey careers and in life. For the Players competing on one of the Jr Penguin Program AAA Midget teams, the 3HL Jr A Penguin team is that next step in their development,” Head Coach Brian Cersosimo said.
Also taken in the draft were three local area Midget AAA players from the Pittsburgh Predators, Pittsburgh Viper Stars and the Pittsburgh Hornets. “We have a full scouting and player placement staff that scout the local midget programs in our area as well. There is a lot of talent in the Pittsburgh, and to have a Jr A team for them to continue their playing careers during or after midgets so they don’t have to leave home is something we are proud to provide to the hockey community,” added Cersosimo.
The Junior A Penguins didn’t stop at just the local talent. They chose players from all over the US and the world. Russia, Latvia, Tennessee, Florida, DC, Texas are just a few diverse locations that the Jr A Penguins drafted from. Dave Hudnall, Head Scout of the Jr Penguins organization comments, “With hockey being a world wide sport and the use of modern technology, it has helped in the scouting and recruitment of many talented players. We know we will provide the right opportunity for these young men to develop their hockey and life skills.”
